Abdominal crunches are very good. I don't do them on the floor though because I have a damaged spine. Laying flat on my back is too painful. What I do do is I use a gym ball and I lay on that instead. Using the gym ball also tends to give you greater flexion. To me it just feels like you get a better workout. The key to doing crunches effectively is to not just flex your abdominal muscles. You need to flex your buttock and your Kegel muscle as well. You are working your pelvic floor muscles too. Flex all three groups of muscles concurrently as you do the crunches. On top of that, make sure you are breathing correctly. Exhale through your mouth as you lift your upper torso, then breathe inward through your nose as you lower yourself and release your flex.
