There is something called "muscle memory". If you had built up your body over many years then stop, when you go back to exercising your body will develop 3 times faster than someone who never worked out.
This has been my experience as of late. In less than a month of doing pushups, the results have been astonishing. It is almost as if I've been injecting steroids. lol

Don't forget to activate your core whilst you do the push ups. It's kind of like doing the plank as you do push ups @lbj. You kill two birds with one stone. It's a compound exercise if you want to make it so. On a side not, if you haven't seen this - Bodybuilding is especially good for elderly people. It keeps you young!

At my gym there's a challenge.
Do the most push ups in under 1 minute.
I can do them quickly until about 40 seconds in. That's when I just lose all my energy.
I have made several practice runs so far and can get to about 45 push up after 40 seconds or so.

I was timed once, I was around 30 at the time. I did 50 pushups in 45 seconds.
